Learn how to say “Okay” and “Not Okay” in Mandarin Chinese
In Chinese, the words “okay”, “good” and “fine” have very similar meanings and therefore, they share the same character, 好 [hǎo]. Frequently, we use the word 好 [hǎo] to form and answer questions. Keep in mind that the ways to form and answer questions are very different between Chinese and English. While in English one can use question words such as “Can” How” and “Why” to ask questions, it does not work in the Chinese language. In Chinese, people often question with the structure like this – “we go out for dinner, okay or not okay?” And in Chinese grammar, this is call verb-negation-verb phrases. In response to the question, while in English people often answer it with yes and no, it also does not work in Chinese. Chinese people answer the question with “okay” or “not okay”.
